2015 was a great year especially in the land of books. I have been lucky enough to read some amazing books from some amazing authors. I even received a part time job at a bookstore (which means even more books to read). It is really hard to pick out just a few books, I hope you enjoy the list and read some yourself.

Wild Reckless

by Ginger Scott

Kensington Worth had a vision for her senior year. It involved her best friends, her posh private school in downtown Chicago and time alone with her piano until her audition was perfected, a guaranteed ticket into the best music programs in the world.

Instead, a nightmare took over.

It didn’t happen all at once, but her life unraveled quickly—a tiny thread that evil somehow kept pulling until everything precious was taken from her. She was suddenly living miles away from her old life, trapped in an existence she didn’t choose—one determined to destroy her from the inside, leaving only hate and anger behind. It didn’t help that her neighbor, the one whose eyes held danger, was enjoying every second of her fall.

Owen Harper was trouble, his heart wild and his past the kind that’s spoken about in whispers. And somehow, his path was always intertwined with Kensington’s, every interaction crushing her, ruining her hope for any future better than her now. Sometimes, though, what everyone warns is trouble, is exactly what the heart needs. Owen Harper was consumed with darkness, and it held onto his soul for years. When Kensington looked at him, she saw a boy who’d gotten good at taking others down when they threatened his carefully balanced life. But the more she looked, the more she saw other things too—good things…things to admire.

Things…to love. Things that made her want to be reckless.

And those things…they were the scariest of all.

Wicked Restless

by Ginger Scott

Andrew Harper grew up in a house marked by tragedy. His older brother Owen did his best to shelter him, but you can only be protected from life’s pain for so long. Eventually, you end up just feeling numb…and isolated.

Loneliness was the one constant in Andrew’s life. Until one girl, met by chance in a high school hallway, changed everything. Emma Burke was a mystery and all that was beautiful in this world, the only air Andrew ever wanted to breathe. She took the lonely away, and filled it with hope and color, and Andrew would do anything to keep her safe, happy and whole.

But sometimes, what feels good and right is what ends up hurting us the most. And when Andrew and Emma are faced with an impossible decision, Andrew is tested to see just how far he’s willing to go for the girl who owns his heart.

Cuts are deep.

Scars are left behind.

And revenge beckons.

When Andrew finally gets his chance, in college, five years after his first love broke him completely, he finds out old feelings don’t really disappear just because you say you hate someone. The more he tries to avenge all that he believes he lost, the more he uncovers the real story of what happened years before.

Love is wicked. But a restless heart is never satisfied beating on its own. Can Andrew and Emma make it right before it’s too late, or will the ties that bind them now destroy their only chance at a future?

Backstage Pass Series

One of my favorite young adult picks is a series by a bunch of different authors called the Backstage Pass Series. I couldn’t choose just one, so they are all on my list.

Aimee and the Heartthrob By Ophelia London:

He never noticed her before, but now she’s all he can see…

Miles Carlisle is every teen girl’s fantasy. His rugged good looks and exotic British accent have helped catapult his boy band, Seconds to Juliet, to super-stardom. But after two disastrous and very public breakups, Miles isn’t interested in dating just any girl; he wants The One. And the only girl he’s interested in is not only his best friend’s little sister – and off-limits – but won’t even give him the time of day…

As a kid, Aimee Bingham had a huge thing for Miles…until he made fun of her for always tagging along. Now that she’s outgrown both him and her pigtails, the prospect of spending two weeks on tour with the childhood crush who broke her heart isn’t exactly enticing. Except now Miles seems interested. Very interested. And no matter how hard Aimee tries to resist him, her crush is definitely making a comeback. But everyone knows that falling for a heartthrob is a backstage pass to heartbreak…

Mia and the Bad Boy by Lisa Burstein

This good girl’s about to meet her match…

Ryder Brooks is living the dream—he’s famous, loved by millions of girls, and miserable. All he really wants is to write his own music, not Seconds to Juliet’s sugary sweet pop. In order to do that, though, the “bad boy” of the band will have to play by the rules. And that includes behaving with his new—and super cute—über-good-girl tutor.

Mia Reyes is in fangirl heaven. Tutoring her favorite member of her favorite band? It’s a dream come true…until it turns into a complete nightmare. Ryder is nothing like she thought. He’s crude, arrogant, and pretty much a total jerk. And the worst part? She’s roped into pretending to be his girlfriend so that no one finds out he’s being tutored. Fake kisses, plenty of PDA, and even sharing his hotel room…

But sometimes even the baddest of bad boys needs a little redemption.

Daisy and the Front Man by Rebekah L. Purdy

Hell hath no fury like a fangirl scorned…

When Daisy Morris finds out she’s spending the summer with her dad, bodyguard for Seconds to Juliet—the hottest boy band around—she knows it couldn’t be more perfect. But not because she’s a fan. Oh, no. Because ever since front man Trevin Jacobs completely humiliated her by standing her up for homecoming, Daisy is out for a little revenge. Yup, Trevin Jacobs is goin’ down…

When one of his bandmates bets Trevin he can’t make Daisy—the gorgeous but surprisingly ice-cold daughter of their bodyguard—fall in love with him, it’s a bet he can’t resist. Sure, Daisy won’t give him the time of day for reasons he can’t understand, and her dad’s hell-bent against his little girl spending time with a superstar. But the terms are set, and Trevin is determined to make Daisy fall…hard.

But every front man should know never to trust a girl with a pretty face…

Anya and the Shy Guy by Suze Winegardener

It’s always the quiet ones…

Anya Anderson doesn’t just need a big break, she needs anybreak. Living on the streets doesn’t leave a girl many options, so when she scores a gig reporting on the Seconds to Juliet tour, she jumps at the chance to earn enough money to sleep somewhere safe. And the paycheck will get bigger – and keep her off the streets for good – if she can dig up dirt on Will Fray, the irritatingly hot “shy guy” of the band.

Problem is, Will Fray isn’t who everyone thinks he is. In fact, he’s not Will at all. Matt, Will’s identical twin, is actually the guy onstage, reluctantly covering for his brother while he’s in rehab. To make matters worse, Matt’s being shadowed by a cute reporter with troubled eyes determined to get the scoop. On him. And he’s having trouble finding the willpower to keep his distance…

But if the secret gets out, it won’t just be his head on a platter – it’ll be the whole band’s.

Abby and the Cute One by Erin Butler

He’s cute. He’s famous. And he could ruin everything…

Every member of Seconds to Juliet has a girlfriend-except for Nathan Strong. Now the band’s manager is leaning hard on “The Cute One” to play the role of the band’s heartthrob. With the band’s sales in decline, it’s up to Nathan to keep the fans’ fantasy alive.

The plan is to stage a fake relationship and a fake breakup, and then let the fans fight to be the one to mend Nathan’s broken heart. Just one problem. There’s another girl in the picture-one Nathan can’t stay away from. In private, Nathan’s stealing kisses with the band’s new opening act, Abby Curtis.

If they’re caught, no one wins. Abby will be fired, and the band might not recover the success they need to survive. But even with the pressure mounting, Nathan and Abby can’t stop themselves from stealing one more touch, one more kiss. And it’s only a matter of time before it all falls apart.

With Visions of Red

By: Trisha Wolfe

Passion and lust ignite. Dark and light battle. This explosive first installment of the Broken Bonds series sets the exhilarating pace for a cat and mouse game where no one knows who’s really pulling the strings.

Criminal profiler Sadie Bonds knows blood. Her affair with the gruesome, dark world of killers began long before she started applying her analytical skills to investigate gory crime scenes. She gets inside the killers’ heads, breaks them down, relates to them on an arcane level. She prefers it this way—because it’s safer to ally herself with the villain than the victim. At least, that’s how she’s coped ever since she was abducted and tortured as a teen.

She will never be a victim again.

Now, she’s honed her skills in order to bring justice to these ritualistic offenders. Working alongside her colleagues, armed with sharp wit and a SIG, Sadie always catches her sadist. Until one ruthless serial killer gets inside Sadie’s head, turning the tables. He knows her secrets. Her obsessions. The darkest, most deviant part of her soul.

When she meets Colton Reed, dangerous stakes are raised as he threatens to unravel her control and reveal her darkest fantasies. The sexy-as-sin bondage rigger at an exclusive BDSM club pushes her boundaries, forcing her to acknowledge that side of herself she fears. Plunged into a realm of torture and suffering, pain and pleasure, Sadie balances on the razor-sharp edge of two intersecting worlds threatening to swallow her.

In the latest from the author of One Night, tragedy causes a young woman to struggle to keep her head above water, and the only one who can help her is the guy who’s been in the friend zone for the past year . . .

Every time life throws Zoe Adler a curve ball, she changes her appearance. Freshmen year—after almost following in her mother’s alcoholic footsteps—she said good-bye to her blonde, girl-next-door image and opted for jet black hair and piercings galore. After her brother Wyatt’s death, she escapes to the city to teach a summer art program for kids. Her black hair goes blue, and she finds solace in the arms of a longtime friend, in his heart, and in his bed—but her guilt makes her unable to accept the love he wants to give.

Spock might be the guy to save Zoe. But when she learns the truth about his past, the edge she’s teetered on since losing Wyatt drops out from under her. The girl who kept it together for everyone finally falls apart. Now Zoe must choose between drowning in guilt about Wyatt or asking for help. But even if she gets the help she needs, Spock may not be waiting for her when she’s ready to let love in.

6608a-review

We all have one life to live and everyone lives it in a different way. Sometimes people are taken from us to early, and that’s what happened to Zoe. Her brother passed away, way too young and Zoe is a mess. The one thing that seems to be keeping her together is her best friend Spock (Zack).

It took me a little while to write this review, since it is kind of hard to relay my thoughts on it. There was so much to this book and I experienced so many emotions while reading it. There were a couple of difficult topics within this book and I think Ms. Pine did a great job writing about them.

I did like how One Life approached addiction. It shows that there are all kinds of addictions, not only drugs and alcohol, but people can be addicted to adrenalin, to dying their hair, and to getting tattoos.

I also loved Zoe and Zach together. They were adorable and I was truly hoping their attraction was real and not one sided. In a way, I wish this book were written in duel POV. For a while I wanted to know what was going through Zack’s mind, but it didn’t make me like the book any less. I did adore him, he was such a sweet hero!

One Life is the second book in the Only You Series, but can be read as a stand-alone. I unfortunately did not read, One Night, but I was able to keep up since, One Life, is about two different characters.

AJ Pine writes stories to break readers’ hearts, but don’t worry—she’ll mend them with a happily ever after. As an English teacher and a librarian, AJ has always surrounded herself with books. All her favorites have one big commonality–romance. Naturally, her books have the same. When she’s not writing, she’s of course reading. Then there’s online shopping (everything from groceries to shoes) and a tiny bit of TV where she nourishes her undying love of vampires and superheroes. And in the midst of all of this, you’ll also find her hanging with her family in the Chicago ‘burbs.

Excerpt:

An eerie, buzzing noise startled both women. Everyone in the restaurant stopped speaking, and the waiters huddled together near the entrance. One of the chefs came out of the kitchen and headed toward the waiters. The noise continued for almost a minute and then abruptly stopped.

“The aliens have landed,” the man joked at the next table.

Everyone laughed and resumed speaking. The chef went back to the kitchen, and the waiters resumed their tasks.

“Wonder what that was?” Barbara’s voice quavered.

But Belinda wasn’t listening. Her right hand trembled as she glanced down at her phone. She flashed the phone at Barbara, who gasped when she read the short message: Mermaid arriving in Carden. Enroute from Toronto.

Belinda grabbed Barbara’s arm. “You must contact Graham at once. Before she arrives.”

“He’s somewhere on the highway between Windsor and here. I can’t tell him everything over the phone.” Barbara thought back to the previous morning when she had awakened to the tickle of a beautiful red rose. As soon as she opened her eyes, Graham kissed her passionately and apologized once more for leaving her with the last-minute details of the engagement party, but it couldn’t be helped. One of his clients had expressed interest in a series of paintings, and Graham was anxious to close the sale.

You must tell him before she arrives,” Belinda said sharply.

“Who is she?”

“She could be anyone from the tribe, anyone at all.” Belinda threw the phone into her purse.

“That strange sound came from your phone?”

“That’s how the underwater Kingdom communicates with me.” Belinda drummed her fingers on the table. “Usually, I get more details, but—”

Barbara wondered about the phone that could easily have been purchased on Earth. Like all other digital devices from the mermaid Kingdom, it did not stand out in any way. She wondered if any other ex-mermaids had such a phone but quickly dismissed that possibility. Unlike Belinda, they were not Bellas so it wouldn’t make sense to entrust them with a direct link to the Kingdom.

“It may not be so bad,” Barbara said. “It might be nice to have another ex-mermaid in our midst.”

“You’re making the assumption that she will be pleased to see you.”

But from the moment they meet, Ramon relentlessly pursues Carino, triggering a whirlwind romance packed with fierce emotions … and secrets that won’t remain buried. Both Ramon and Carino have worked hard to put their pasts behind them, but the truth could bring their whole lives crumbling down.

Will their unlikely relationship be worth sacrificing everything they’ve worked for? Or will their secrets prove to be bigger than their love?

My Thoughts:

I always love reading books that when you think everything is fine and dandy and all of a sudden something happens and you are completely shocked. Dangerous Decisions had that affect on me and I am so excited I was given a chance to read this book.

Right away I was drawn into this book, Ms. Cruz introduced us to Carino and her bad day, which was very realistic. It was something that I can see happening to me. I also liked the fact that even though there was a huge attraction between Carino and Ramno, they took their time and out to know each other before anything really happened. By them getting to know each other, I was able to get to know them and boy was there a lot to get to know in Ramon, he was so complex! One of my favorite things to look for while reading is character development and this story had it in all the right place!!!

I think anyone who enjoys reading suspense romances then this one would be a great pick. It not only kept me engaged but it was a quick read!

~~EXCERPT~~

We were introduced to the Queen quite suddenly. None of us had time to even look in a mirror to fix our hair. We met her in a small, cosy room filled with vases of white roses. She was sitting in a comfy red chair and there was a corgi asleep at her feet. She looked just like she did on stamps. She was quite small, and her hair was immaculately white. She was wearing a cream coloured skirt and matching top with gold buttons; the kind of outfit only The Queen can look good in. When we entered the room she smiled and stood up

“Pleased to meet you, you must be Oscar,” she said, shaking Tom’s hand (her voice was exactly as it sounds on TV).

Tom looked embarrassed. “That’s Oscar,” he mumbled, pointing at me.

15-Minutes-Low-Res-Cover

“Ah. Of course. What a tribute you are to our nation…” she said, shaking my hand, then she moved on to Elliot, and started asking him questions.

I think she thought we were a boy band. She asked Elliot where he was from. When he told her London, she seemed surprised, and asked him what religion he was. He said he didn’t know. Then she moved on and started asking Abe Lincoln about his favourite songs. Abe Lincoln told her, then she moved swiftly on to ask Winston some questions, and that’s when something unbelievable happened (and thank god I was looking at Winston when it happened because it’s an image I’ll never forget). The Queen had just asked him what his middle name was. Winston was thinking of the answer, then his face went pale white and he leaned sideways and vomited into a giant Chinese vase. It all happened in slow motion. Elliot, Tom, Abe Lincoln and me gasped. The Queen shrieked, and her corgi woke up and started barking. A guard ran over and took the Queen by the arm and rushed her out of the room. Winston kept saying sorry, but it was no use. We were chased out by a furious Palace guard.

I sat up and pulled my knees in close to my chest. Electricity flared in the air as Luke inhaled.

“You know, Logan, you’re not who I expected you to be,” he said, taking a long thought-filled pause. “I thought the next twelve months were going to be hell living with a California socialite, but you’re pretty amazing. I guess I owe you an apology.”

“So, it’s a good thing that I’m nothing like you expected?” I asked.

“It’s a really, really good thing.”

As I started to smile back he craned his neck to look away from me. His eyes focused. Something black flashed across the road but I was more scared by Luke’s reaction. The warmth had vanished from Luke in a heartbeat. The object stopped moving toward us when it got to an opening between the trees. Even though I could feel Luke’s concern, I leaned forward toward the window, curious. It was a wolf – a really big wolf, staring directly at us with bright green eyes. It was close enough I could see quick breaths escape into the crisp rain-drenched air. I was startled when the engine roared to life. Luke threw the car into reverse, and I nearly slammed into the dash as the sound of gravel scattered everywhere. He quickly jockeyed around and pulled back onto the road heading home. I kept my eyes on the wolf until he was no longer in sight.

“Was that a wolf?” I asked. Everything happened so quickly, I had to be sure.

“Yes,” he spit.

“I’ve never seen a wolf before – that thing was huge.”

Luke immediately turned to look at me with an expression that I couldn’t begin to read.

“What’s going on?” I pressed, puzzled.

When he looked toward the road and didn’t answer, I knew my question needed to be more specific to get results.

“Why are you freaking out? It was just a wolf.” I was worried. He had gone from warm and comforting to moody and distant over such a small thing and I second-guessed how quickly I had fallen for him.

“Because I need to get you home, it’s getting late,” he muttered, failing to control his tone.

“That doesn’t make any sense, Luke. I have no curfew and you flaked as soon as you saw the wolf.”

“Wolves are dangerous.”

“We were in the car,” I countered.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Excerpt:
Bella pulled a couple of books out of her locker. What was her first class again? She hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. The nightmare had returned. Why had it started up again? She hadn’t dreamt of that day months. It had to be the stress. Yesterday the tutoring requests had begun to come in, more than she could have anticipated for the first day of school. There was so much organization required. She had meant to come in early and do some work on it, but she was so tired. And her parents hadn’t helped. All they talked about was how it would look on college applications. Graduation was still two long years away. College wasn’t even a top priority at the moment. Surviving her junior year was the most important thing. Her brain was clogged like a hair-filled pipe. Not even Drano could unclog this mess.
“Look what the cat dragged in.” Heather jeered and paused behind Bella. Heather’s tag-alongs took up a spot on either side of Bella. The three girls effectively cornered Bella against her locker.
“Are you sure it was a cat, and not an old, frumpy, cat lady with no taste in clothes?”
Bella peered at Missy Watkins, a prickly blonde witch who was also on the cheerleading squad, and then turned back to her books. Yes, she had agreed to deal with their insults, but it would be on her time.
“You’re right about the clothes. And she does smell a little like mothballs.” Heather waved a hand in front of her face as if she were attempting to fan fumes away.
“I bet it’s the clothes that smell. They’re probably hand-me-downs from her grandmother.” Cassie Shows giggled; she was an uptight redhead, a third wheel in their little group and the only one not a cheerleader. She just had money. They had been tethered together from the moment the three of them met.
They normally poked fun at her clothes, so this wasn’t unusual behavior. She hadn’t worn anything different today than she had the day before. A dark denim skirt, a short-sleeve turquoise button-up trimmed with lace, and brown flats. Like always her hair was braided and hung down her back. Bella dug around in her locker. What was she looking for?
“You know, with all these rags, I’m really curious what your brother sees in her.” Missy crossed her arms and popped a hip out.
Heather snickered. “That’s easy. He feels sorry for her.”
They could make fun of her clothes or call her names, but she would be damned if they insulted what someone may feel for her. Bella’s hand tightened around a book. She stared at the book and imagined smacking Heather upside the head with it. Unfortunately, the suspension from school that would surely follow would suck. Inhaling deeply, she slammed her locker shut and turned around. “Listen up and listen good. I don’t give a rat’s behind what you think of my clothes. I know why you pick on me. I have something you don’t.”
“Like I would want bad ––”
“Shut up! I’m not finished. I have pride in who I am and I stand for something you can never get back. I still have the chance to give myself when I choose to because I love that person. You can’t. There are all kinds of rumors how freely you give it away. And now guys are losing interest, so you do and say whatever you need to, to make yourself feel better. Well, it ends here. I don’t care what a couple of sluts think of me because you can’t take away what I have.”
“Why you little ––”
“Don’t even try it, Heather. You’re nothing but tainted sludge. I suggest you get used to the gutter. It’s where you belong.” Bella shoved the three girls aside as if they were annoying flies. She hadn’t even noticed that a small crowd of students had gathered nearby, who clapped as she broke through. Her cheeks flushed with heat. With another deep breath, she made her way through the assembled students. Several patted her on the shoulder and others offered congratulations. An arm hooked into hers and she jumped. Alex, it was just Alex. A breath escaped her lips and her temperature started to come down.
