Book Review: Prime Target by Marquita Valentine

Published December 29, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog

We’re celebrating the release of PRIME TARGET by Marquita Valentine!

Title:Prime Target (Target #1)
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: Decemeber 29, 2015
Book Description:
Meet Roman Smith: Shopkeeper by Day. Assassin by Night.
The undercover Russian contract killer has never turned down an assignment that rids the world of scum… until his latest job targets an innocent man. Refusing is not an option, because of Everly Andrews, the sexy southern belle who saved him from dying. She’s completely unaware of his double life, but has been marked as next on the kill list should he fail. Only, what The Bratva doesn’t know—there’s nothing Roman won’t do to keep Everly safe. Drugged and deposited in a hotel in Prague, Roman must be on guard at all times in order to protect Everly, but the countdown has begun, and it won’t stop until his next target, or Everly, is terminated. Can Roman protect Everly until he can eliminate the threat to her life?
**Formerly The Request Series. Prime Target includes all three books from The Request Series.
Book Review:

Prime Target was a fast-paced suspenseful book about Roman, an assassin pretending to be a bookstore owner. Roman also has one customer that he has grown attached to even though he doesn’t want to. Everly, reciprocates his feelings, but Roman has a hard time acting upon them. When they finally have a night together Roman’s fears come true and he will do anything to protect Everly.

I really enjoyed reading Roman and Everly’s story; I felt the chemistry from the very beginning. Since this book was short, we didn’t get much of a backstory, it was more the here and now. Childhoods weren’t spoken about and I really didn’t know much about Everly. At the end not having the backstory made something parts a little confusing, but still enjoyable. Prime Target was also told in duel POV, but we only get Everly’s POV in two chapters, the majority was Roman, which I really enjoyed!

Marquita Valentine never lets me down and I can’t wait to read book two!

“A funny, poetic, big-hearted reminder that life can—and will—take us all by surprise.” —Jennifer E. Smith, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Can the best thing happen at the worst time?
Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she’s about to experience when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend’s brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure’s soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.

Exclusive Excerpt:

When Wrenny and I roll up the hill to Eden’s house in Mom’s ancient Corolla, Digby and his dad, John, are outside playing basketball, and I want to get in the house as fast as possible,
because otherwise I might be trapped here all day, staring. I get a little twinge of something seeing a dad and his kid playing ball like dads and kids are supposed to. That’s a real
thing, and my hand wants to cover Wren’s face so she can’t see all that she is missing.
Which reminds me. “Wren.”
“Yeah?” She’s wiping at her shirt, reading a book on her lap, and she’s a little bit filthy, her hair greasy and knotty in spite of my efforts this morning. At some point the braids came out, and she’s reverted to wild.
“You know how Mom hasn’t been around lately?”
She stops. Tightens. “Yeah,” she says.
“Well, we don’t want anyone to know about that, okay?
Even Janie and Eden and Digby and John.”
“But Mom’s on vacation. She’s getting her head together. She’s coming back.”
“Okay, yes,” I say, “but still. We don’t want to tell anyone, because they might not understand that. They might get the wrong idea.”
“Like that she left us permanently?” There is so much more going on inside that Wrenny-head than I can ever know.
“Maybe, or at least for longer than she was supposed to.” I reach for the handle to the door because I can’t look at her. “Someone might think that.”
“She didn’t, though,” she says. “She’s Mom.”
“Of course she didn’t.” Lie.
“So who cares what anyone thinks?”
“Wren, just don’t, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Some things are private.” I open the door, then lean back across and wipe uselessly at her shirt with my thumb. “Like Mom being on vacation. So, okay?”
“I said okay, okay?” She gets out and waits, stares at me like I’m the most aggravating person on earth. “Hey, Lu?”
“Yeah?” I say, bracing myself for what’s next.
“Your mama’s so fat, she left the house in high heels and came back in flip-flops.”
I would tell her that I hate her new obsession with fat jokes, but I’m not in the mood for any dawdling, so I half laugh and get moving. I want to get inside and quick because there’s also the other thing. And by “other” I mean what makes me sweat just standing here. And by “thing” I mean Digby, who I have known since I was seven but who lately makes a fumbling moronic moron out of me, a full-on halfwit. Ask me my name when I’m in his presence and I’m not likely to be able to tell you. I’d probably just say, “Lllll . . . lllllllu . . .” and you’d have to catch the drool running down my chin.
I know. It’s not at all attractive.
But really. Tall, sweaty, and not wearing a shirt, so the muscles are all right there for the watching. He doesn’t exactly glisten, on account of the fact that he’s whiter than white, that he tans by getting freckles so he’s covered in them now after a whole summer outside. But seeing his hair all plastered to his forehead, his body so long and lean, looping around his dad to get the ball into the hoop, I want to fall out of the car and onto my knees in the driveway, say Lord have mercy, hallelujah, write sonnets and paint him, and worship that one little curve where his neck meets his shoulder that is just so, so perfect.
He is beautiful.
Which is why when he says hi as I pass him, I barely raise a pinky in response. There are two main problems here, aside from the fact that he is Eden’s twin and that’s all kinds of weird.
One, he’s had the same girlfriend since the dawn of time. They’re pinned, she wears his jacket, their marriage certificate is practically already signed. Angels bless their freakin’ union. And two, if I ever did get a chance with him, like if he ever kissed me or something, I would die of implosion. I know I sound like a twelve-year-old mooning over some celebrity, and not the extremely self-possessed woman-tobe that I actually am, but something about him makes me lose my mind. Something about the way he moves, about his himness — it shatters me all the way down. So I hope he never does kiss me. That would be nothing but a disaster. No one needs to see me fall apart like that. Least of all him.
Actually, maybe least of all me.

A man out for revenge…
When Alexander Volkow raced into Crossroads, Alabama and bought up half of Broad Street, the entire town questioned his motives, but he didn’t care. He did it for one reason and only one reason — to find the man who went AWOL from the military with his brother, Kon. Knowing Kon, something is terribly wrong, and Alex is set on retribution.
But when all roads lead to the town’s favorite daughter, who just happens to be the missing man’s fiancée, Alex can’t help but be mesmerized by her alluring southern charm and sexy little snort.
A woman searching for a way out
No amount of bartending, snake charming, or organic cotton growing can stop the fear blooming inside Polly Anna Coots. She knows if her MIA fiancée is found alive, he’ll want to follow through with their marriage plans, but she has had a change of heart — and not just because of the new man she can’t get out of her head. If her fiancée returns and she reneges on their future, she’ll end up DOA.
When one of Polly Anna’s snakes runs Alex off the road, sparks fly, and the two embark on a steamy collision course in a small town filled with secrets that add fuel to the smoldering fire.
Can either one of them get just close enough to acquire what they need from the other without falling in love?
*Can be read as a stand alone.*

6608a-review

As much as I liked Just in Case, I like Just Close Enough even more. There were so many things I loved about this book. From the characters to the story line, there were times I was laughing, times I was angry and times I was upset. Even though I read the first book, you can read this one as a stand-alone. This book goes back to before the last one started. It was very interesting see P.M. in the book unlike the last one.

While reading Just in Case, I learned a little bit about Polly Anna, I just didn’t know what was really going on in her head. I am so glad I have learned the truth about not only her relationship with Alex, but also about her relationship with Billy, all is not what it seems. I enjoyed Polly Anna a lot she was a sweet girl but also did take any nonsense from anyone. Alex was great too! Who wouldn’t want a man with an accent sweep the off their feet.

There were also tons of twist and turns in this book too! I never knew what was going to happen next and I couldn’t wait to see.

I hope I don’t have to wait long to read Mandy and JR’s story (I hope that’s the next one).

Just in Case (Alabama Secrets Series
#1)

6608a-review

The thing about this book that interested me was all of the secrets going on in the town of Crossroads. Just in Case is the beginning of uncovering them all.

At the very beginning, I though this book was going to bored me and that it was moving too slow. I also think I thought it was moving slow because of all of the southern phrases that I wasn’t used to hearing (although, by the end I loved them all). There were so many twists and turns through out the book and what kept me reads, was that I needed to know what was in Scarlett’s mother’s suicide note. Once I found out, boy was it shocking!

I loved Scarlett, at times I just wanted her to let Revell love her, but I completely understand her hesitations. Scarlett hasn’t had the easiest life and she was such a strong person. Yes, there are times when it’s too much for her, but after a while she picks herself back up. I also love her friendship with Polly Anna. The two over them were both going through something and were able to help each other out a little bit. Then there’s Revell, the perfect southern gentleman any girl would be lucky to have. He also had a lot going on in his past and present and Scarlett was the person keeping him grounded.

As much as I loved the main characters, the secondary ones were great too. I cant wait to read Polly Anna/Alex and Mandy/JR’s stories.

The two of them have undeniable, explosive chemistry that threatens to burn both of their dreams to the ground. Once Chayse let’s Hoyt in, she can’t seem to keep her protective walls up anymore. EXCERPT:

“I’m not sure exactly what has your panties in such a twist today,” I bit out, standing to face him. “All I’ve done is exactly what you’ve told me to. The past week, I’ve been on time. I’ve done every workout. I’ve watched every film. Even the ones of my deadbeat dad, thank you very fucking much for that, by the way. All I asked was how much longer you planned on making me watch other people ride when that’s exactly what I should be doing. Riding.”

I could see the remorse in his eyes but his stubborn stance remained. “Oh, you’re a coach now?”

“I don’t know. Are you?” I couldn’t stop the words if I’d wanted to. This guy had been pushing my buttons and I’d had enough. I felt my nails bite into my skin as my hands balled into fists at my side. “You helped your brother. Big deal. You’ve got about as much experience coaching as I do.”

He shook his head and huffed out a breath.

“If I was coaching a rider, I sure as shit wouldn’t expect the person I was hired to help to sit on her ass all afternoon and waste daylight. The whole point of a riding coach is to be coach while riding. Why that’s such a hard concept for you to understand, I’m not sure.”

“Oh I understand the concept,” he assured me, pushing the chair that was separating us to the side. I felt my chest heave with the effort of taking in oxygen when he stepped toward me. His eyes looked like laser beams about to cut completely through me. “The problem is, the second you fire up your bike, you stop listening. You stop paying attention to the words that are coming out of my mouth. At least in here, sitting on your ass, you are paying attention.” He reached up and tapped my forehead with his finger. “If you could get your brain to stop pretending that it knows everything then maybe I’d be more inclined to let you ride.”

I fought back a laugh. A laugh that was brought on by the fact that I was so utterly pissed at him that my only option was the laugh, cry, or punch him in the face. I never pretended to know it all. I never even pretended to know half of it.

“Well, maybe if you’d get this,” I reached up between us and tapped my finger against his forehead the same way he’d done to me. “Out of your ass and actually act like a coach instead of a drill instructor, I’d be more inclined to listen.”

He didn’t move. He didn’t even flinch. He stood there with his jaw clenched and his eyes still locked on mine. I’d expected him to say something. To argue that I was wrong. Hell, a tiny little part of me even actually thought he might apologize. Instead, he did nothing.

Glaring and breathing—that was all we were both capable of at that particular moment.

Excerpt

I look at the guy leaning against the vehicle. He’s wearing flip flops. His tanned complexion gleams against the warm sun’s rays. He’s wearing light, blue washed shorts with fashionable rips.

His jaws are clenched, his body hard. He’s shirtless…very shirtless. Air trickles out of my mouth as I exhale in awe. My heart beat slows down and the light, warm wind moves the tiny hairs on my skin.

The gravel beneath him crunches and rumbles as he slowly walks toward me. He smirks at me. His chocolate eyes are mouthwatering.

I feel a presence around us as the air between our bodies stiffened. Hollister cologne slithers up into my nostrils. My nose flares as he touches me underneath my chin with the tip of his thumb. He leans over me and whispers into my ear.

“You’re staring again, Miss Swift,” he says, his voice rough and raspy. I shudder. Goose bumps pop on my skin, traveling down from my ear onto my lower back.

He must be rich if he has both a motorcycle and a car. I can’t believe Eric is in front of me and not Dawn. How does he even know where I live?

My lips part slowly. I say, “I—I’m sorry.”

He slides his hand down my arm. I grip the strap of my beach bag because I’m nervous. He eventually finds my fingers and gently loosens the grip. While he continues to stare into my eyes, I see their light green reflection through his.

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it,” he replies. He grabs my beach bag and interrupts my daze. My eyes flutter up to his face. He was so close to me…The nerves in my body tickle against my skin.

His muscular chest rises as he breathes, and the veins along his slim arms are visible. I glance down at my beach bag.

“Where’s, uh, Dawn?” I manage to say, looking around. I purse my lips and pull out my cellphone to shoot her a text, but he grabs my phone and places it in his pocket.

“Don’t worry about it,” he says under his breath, grinning.

THE MOTHER ROAD by Meghan Quinn
NA Romantic Comedy
Release date: January 12, 2016
Cover Designed by: Indie Solutions by Murphy Rae

Blurb:

Never in a million years would I have pictured myself as an axe-wielding, dragon lady, chopping up multi-colored flannel shirts into my very own plaid mulch. But here I am, chopping away my frustrations.

It all started when my brother, Paul, convinced me to go on one last family road trip across the Mother Road with him and my dad.. Just like old times, right? Wrong. What Paul fails to mention is his best man, Porter, will be joining us, who just so happens to be my childhood crush and the man who broke my heart four years ago.

What is supposed to be a fun, family bonding experience across Route 66 turns into a war

of pranks, awkward moments and bathrooms full of dirty flannel shirts and day old beard clippings. Paul’s know-it-all attitude and Porter’s devilish charm brings me to the brink of my sanity on my seven day trek across the United States with three bearded men in a small 1980’s RV.

Excerpt
“Marley, put the axe down and step away from the flannels,” Porter says, hands extended, as if he wants to help.
“You’re not in a good frame of mind. This is not who you are. You’re not an axe wielding psychopath looking to make a pile of long sleeved cotton into your very own plaid colored mulch,” Paul tries to convince her.“Buttons, please put the axe down. We can talk about whatever is bothering you. Please don’t chop up Daddy’s Americana flannel shirt.”

Let’s pause for a second; do you see those three men standing to the side, fear in their eyes, sweat at their temples, with their hands clutched at their waists and their asses tight enough to pop open a bottle of beer?

Yeah, those three, they’re the reason why I’m foaming at the mouth, gripping an axe three sizes too big for my body with my heels dug deep into the wet and muddy ground.

That’s me, Marley McMann, the brunette in the “rustic” orange bridesmaid dress with a bouquet sticking out of my hair and a pile of multi-colored poly-blend barf rags resting in front of me, waiting to be minced into my very own personal hamster shit shavings.

I’m not usually threatening to slice the buttons off of men’s clothing with a lead shiv big enough to cut down a knotty vagina-looking sycamore tree. But I’ve had my limit.

There comes a time in a girl’s life when she has to reach deep down into her soul, clear the pathways of her inner goddess, and let out her nuclear Satan. You know what I’m talking about.

The crazy.

Don’t try to act like you don’t have it; every woman does.

Let me paint you a picture. It’s that time of the month; its shark week, as some may say. The civil war is being reenacted by your ovaries and death is scatted over your fallopian tubes. You’re crippled over in pain on your couch, half a Snickers bar hanging out of your mouth, a heating pad pressed against your innards, and a blanket wrapped around you as if you’re a cocktail wiener in a Pillsbury croissant. The Hallmark Channel is airing that Mario Lopez movie you’ve been dying to see and not because the plot looks good, but because you want to reminisce on your Saved by the Bell days. Mario is the only thing getting you through this time of need, that and the chocolate drool slowly dripping into the back of your throat.

You’re content, minus the battlefield in your uterus, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the mister in your life flops on the couch, causing a ripple within your cocoon. Your heating pad shifts and your Snickers bar falls to the ground. The swoon-worthy shot of Mario with his shirt off gets switched to some stupid sporting game just as the mister lifts his ass in your direction and blasts two large farts.

Can you feel the monster start to awaken?

You try to remain calm; you tell yourself it’s going to be alright…until one simple crack of his knuckles rings through the room. You lose it. Your eyelids flip inside out, fire shoots out of your vagina, and your toenails grow to exponential pterodactyl lengths. You’re at his throat, scratching his jugular with your toes until you’re satisfied enough with the human carnage you’ve turned him into.

That moment right there, that’s where I’m at.

In all honesty, I’m a pleasant human. I have my own beauty blog and live in sunny Los Angeles, where I pay an ass ton of money to live in a two-bedroom apartment the size of walk-in closet, but I make it work. You know those hidden Murphy beds? I have one; be jealous. I get to work from home, test out different cosmetics, and write about them. I’ve got a pretty easy going life, or at least I did.

It all started when Paul, my older brother, decided to get married. No, this isn’t one of those stories where I talk about the evil soon to be sister-in-law and how she’s ruined my life. I actually adore Savannah; she’s perfect for my brother, minus the big eyes. I swear she blinks three times less than the average human.

This is about the week leading up to my brother’s wedding…the week that I now refer to on my blog as the journey of three beards and a mascara brush.

Confused? Don’t be; you will understand very quickly where I’m coming from.

About the Author:

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Book Review:

I have loved all the books I have read from Ms. Valentine. I sadly never read Take the Fall, but that did stop me from enjoying When We Fall.

This was a story of the “good girl” falling for the “bad boy”, a lot of times that situation is over done and a boring read, but this one was the opposite. Not sure what it was all this one, but it wasn’t boring and I just couldn’t put it down!

I really liked Rowan; she was stronger than she wanted to believe she was. Standing up and fighting for what she loved was strong. I was not a fan of her parents at all! Her mother was a piece of work and always put her down. I also think her father was doing some things that would hurt Jase. Then there was Jase, at first he pissed me off on how he treated Rowan and how he felt in order to push her away, he needed to flirt with other girls. Over time though, Jase won me over.

I can’t wait to read Hunter’s story next. I think I know who it will be with!!
