ONE LIFE (Only You #2) by A.J. Pine
NA Contemporary Romance
Purchase One Life

In the latest from the author of One Night, tragedy causes a young woman to struggle to keep her head above water, and the only one who can help her is the guy who’s been in the friend zone for the past year . . .

Every time life throws Zoe Adler a curve ball, she changes her appearance. Freshmen year—after almost following in her mother’s alcoholic footsteps—she said good-bye to her blonde, girl-next-door image and opted for jet black hair and piercings galore. After her brother Wyatt’s death, she escapes to the city to teach a summer art program for kids. Her black hair goes blue, and she finds solace in the arms of a longtime friend, in his heart, and in his bed—but her guilt makes her unable to accept the love he wants to give.

Spock might be the guy to save Zoe. But when she learns the truth about his past, the edge she’s teetered on since losing Wyatt drops out from under her. The girl who kept it together for everyone finally falls apart. Now Zoe must choose between drowning in guilt about Wyatt or asking for help. But even if she gets the help she needs, Spock may not be waiting for her when she’s ready to let love in.

We all have one life to live and everyone lives it in a different way. Sometimes people are taken from us to early, and that’s what happened to Zoe. Her brother passed away, way too young and Zoe is a mess. The one thing that seems to be keeping her together is her best friend Spock (Zack).

It took me a little while to write this review, since it is kind of hard to relay my thoughts on it. There was so much to this book and I experienced so many emotions while reading it. There were a couple of difficult topics within this book and I think Ms. Pine did a great job writing about them.

I did like how One Life approached addiction. It shows that there are all kinds of addictions, not only drugs and alcohol, but people can be addicted to adrenalin, to dying their hair, and to getting tattoos.

I also loved Zoe and Zach together. They were adorable and I was truly hoping their attraction was real and not one sided. In a way, I wish this book were written in duel POV. For a while I wanted to know what was going through Zack’s mind, but it didn’t make me like the book any less. I did adore him, he was such a sweet hero!

One Life is the second book in the Only You Series, but can be read as a stand-alone. I unfortunately did not read, One Night, but I was able to keep up since, One Life, is about two different characters.

AJ Pine writes stories to break readers’ hearts, but don’t worry—she’ll mend them with a happily ever after. As an English teacher and a librarian, AJ has always surrounded herself with books. All her favorites have one big commonality–romance. Naturally, her books have the same. When she’s not writing, she’s of course reading. Then there’s online shopping (everything from groceries to shoes) and a tiny bit of TV where she nourishes her undying love of vampires and superheroes. And in the midst of all of this, you’ll also find her hanging with her family in the Chicago ‘burbs.

Book Review: Missing Dixie by Caisey Quinn

Title- Missing Dixie

Fighting for redemption…

I’ve lived most of my life in darkness, beneath the shadows of secrets and addictions. The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt the only girl I’d ever loved-the one who brought me into the light. In my entire life I’d made one promise-a promise I’d intended to keep. I’ve broken that promise and now I have to live with the fallout. Dixie Lark hates me, and I have to tell her that I love her. I also have to tell her a truth that might destroy us forever.

Can she love me even if she can’t forgive me?

Learning to move on…

Gavin Garrison broke his promise to my brother and he broke my heart in the process. I may never love anyone the way I’ve loved him, but at least I won’t spend my life wondering what if. We had our one night and he walked away. I’m finally beginning to move on when my brother’s wedding and a battle of the bands brings us back together.

Our band is getting a second chance, but I don’t know if I can give him one. How do you hand your heart back to the person who set it on fire once already?

If Leaving Armadillo did put me through enough, Missing Dixie put me through it again. Missing Dixie was such a heart-wrenching story; there were times I had to put it down because I was so heart broken, but it was all worth it in the end.

After reading Leaving Armadillo, I knew I was going to be in for a ride while reading this one. I’m kind of glad I read these two back to back and Loving Dallas first because I would have been able to wait to find out what happened to Gavin and Dixie. I don’t often read books out of order, but for some reason I didn’t with this series. I not sure if I would recommend reading books out of order, but it worked me.

Gavin’s story was such an emotional ride. He has gone though and done things that other people wouldn’t be able to over look, but not Dixie. She wanted to be there for him every step of the way, even though he kept pushing her away. There was one moment in the book, and I couldn’t believe he did what he did in order to push her away. Both Gavin and Dixie have amazingly big hearts and love each other sooo much.

I don’t want to give anything away because I know if I write anymore I will do so. I will say I whole heartily recommend this book. You will laugh, cry and swoon while reading, but it will all be work it.

I absolutely loved this series and book, and I can’t wait to see what Ms. Quinn will write next! I know I’ll reading anything else she writes.

Book Review: Paint My Body Red by Heidi R. Kling

Paint My Body Red

by Heidi R. Kling

Release Date: 11/02/15

Entangled Teen

They think I’ll be number seven. Unlucky number seven.

Dead teenager number seven. With the rash of suicides at my school, I’ve been shipped off to my dad’s Wyoming ranch for “my own safety.” My mom worries I’ll be next—another depressed teenager whose blood will end up on the train tracks. But she doesn’t know my secrets…or what I did.

Everything has changed at the ranch since I was there last. The staff is gone, and there aren’t any visitors. The place is struggling, and ALS is destroying my dad. The one bright spot in this mess is his new—and only—ranch hand, Jake. He’s gorgeous, cheerful, healthy and sane. Shadows don’t haunt his eyes and eat away at him in the night.

But the ranch and Jake can’t save me from the darkness inside, or the knowledge of what I’ve done. This time, it’s up to me to save myself…

Add to Goodreads

Paint My Body Red was dark yet sweet story about Paige, who is spending her summer with her father on his ranch. She hasn’t seen her father in years and things have changed with him and with the ranch. Even though there was a bunch of changes this was the perfect way to get away from what was going on at home. The students in Paige’s hometown have been committing suicide due to a number of reason, the biggest one being, not getting into the college they wanted to get into. Paige’s mom thought it would be perfect to send Paige away to her father in order to keep her safe.

I love seeing growth in the main characters through out the book, and this one was no different. Paige’s growth was very apparent in many different aspects of her life. Paige over came her past and became a better person during her time at the ranch. At the start I wasn’t too sure if I liked her, but by the end, I adored her. I also loved Jake, he was amazing to not only Paige but to her father as well.

I also liked how the flashbacks were shown as Paige sat down to write. It was as if she was writing everything in her journal and I was able to take a peek inside.

Ms. Kling did a great just speaking about serious subjects and it was done in a very tasteful way without her sugarcoating it. Both what was happening in her school and things with Ty were extremely serious.

I would completely recommend this to teens and I think they would really enjoy it.

Told in dual narratives, several more installments are planned in this “Romeo and Juliet with magic” series readers compare to stories by  LJ Smith, Cassandra Clare and Melissa de la Cruz.

After earning her MFA in Writing for Children from the New School, she returned to her native California. She lives with her husband, two children and the cutest accidental puppy mix ever, Sailor Lily, just over the coastal mountains from the sea.

Jackson Landis kept secrets. It’s how he got girls into bed, the grades he wanted, and a reputation for being the life of the party.
But now he’s dead, and no one knows how or why. Especially not the four girls whose secrets he protected. Secrets so scandalous they could cause each girl to lose something valuable. Secrets so dark, someone may have killed for them.
The four girls – a campus drug dealer, an overweight bookworm, a closeted lesbian, and a spoiled princess have one thing in common – they’re terrified the things Jackson knew may not have died with him. As Reggie, Haddie, Val, and Livie try to piece together her own role in Jackson’s death, each girl realizes Jackson had some not-so-pretty skeletons of his own.
Which makes a girl wonder, who really wanted Jackson Landis dead?

We’re trying to discover who killed Jason Landis in Jamie Blair and Dawn Rae Miller’s book. In the 7 days that the tour will be running, you will find interviews with the suspects, their profiles and music playlists that will help you decide who you think did it.

Release Blitz: With Visions of Red Box Set by Trisha Wolfe

Published November 4, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog
Title: With Visions of Red Boxed Set
Series: Broken Bonds #1-3
Author: Trisha Wolfe
Genre: Dark Romantic Thriller
 Release Date: November 4, 2015
Book One

Passion and lust ignite. Dark and light battle. This explosive first installment of the Broken Bonds series sets the exhilarating pace for a cat and mouse game where no one knows who’s really pulling the strings.
Criminal profiler Sadie Bonds knows blood. Her affair with the gruesome, dark world of killers began long before she started applying her analytical skills to investigate gory crime scenes. She gets inside the killers’ heads, breaks them down, relates to them on an arcane level. She prefers it this way—because it’s safer to ally herself with the villain than the victim. At least, that’s how she’s coped ever since she was abducted and tortured as a teen.

She will never be a victim again.

Now, she’s honed her skills in order to bring justice to these ritualistic offenders. Working alongside her colleagues, armed with sharp wit and a SIG, Sadie always catches her sadist. Until one ruthless serial killer gets inside Sadie’s head, turning the tables. He knows her secrets. Her obsessions. The darkest, most deviant part of her soul.

When she meets Colton Reed, dangerous stakes are raised as he threatens to unravel her control and reveal her darkest fantasies. The sexy-as-sin bondage rigger at an exclusive BDSM club pushes her boundaries, forcing her to acknowledge that side of herself she fears. Plunged into a realm of torture and suffering, pain and pleasure, Sadie balances on the razor-sharp edge of two intersecting worlds threatening to swallow her.

Book Two The UNSUB has made contact.

After a rapid string of grisly murders shakes the usually peaceful city of Arlington, Virginia, the sadistic killings of young women lull into a deceptive calm. Agent Sadie Bonds knows the terror isn’t over; serial killers don’t stop until caught.

And this sadist has targeted the profiler, revealing pieces of her dark past and weaving her secrets into each gruesome crime scene. Is the killer someone from Sadie’s past, her present? Or is he part of a fated future she brought on herself? The answer lies within the riddle of the copycat killings, ones mimicked after the infamous Blood Countess.

As tension brews in the department awaiting the UNSUB’s next move, Sadie’s more than on edge—her deviant cravings for the possible perpetrator have ratcheted out of control. She needs the feel of Colton’s ropes binding her, sheltering her from stark reality.

Only Colton Reed has his own twisted secrets that threaten to unravel not only Sadie as they come to light, but the UNSUB’s carefully constructed web now entangling both the profiler and her sexy bondage rigger.

Book Three Who is the UNSUB?

For Agent Sadie Bonds, finding the answer to that question means the difference between life and death for someone close to her. The UNSUB’s latest abduction reaches right into the heart of the ACPD, forcing every member of the department to search within their ranks for the sadistic perpetrator.

Suspicion not only clouds the task force; it slithers into Sadie and Colton’s bond, challenging their love. Discovering the truth means facing their past together. Sadie’s connection to Colton has quieted her inner demons—but is she strong enough to confront the real monster?

All players take their places as the stage is set for the final scene. With the UNSUB manipulating the game, even Sadie and Colton fall victim, spiraling deep into the darkness that threatens not only their lives, but their trust. As Sadie navigates a tortuous maze, Colton will do whatever is takes to protect her.

The truth will set you free. Only for Sadie, her truth will test the very fabric of her reality. She must silence the threat, or risk losing everything and everyone she loves.

Now, as the bicentennial anniversary of the impact approaches, a new leader prepares to take her place at the head of the government. At least, that’s what she thinks.

Bethanie Greene’s life has been planned out for her since the age of thirteen. Beautiful and intelligent, she’s spent the last twelve years training to become the next Matron of the underground nation of Oceania. But when Bethanie is kidnapped by rogue extremists just six weeks shy of taking office, her world is turned upside down by the handsome stranger who rescues her.

Howard James’ life has been the polar opposite of Bethanie’s. Struggling to survive in a world where those in power wished he didn’t exist, he harbors a deep-seated resentment of the government and all its representatives. Together with his unconventional family, he shows Bethanie a life she never knew was possible, while at the same time, opening her eyes to the injustices of the government she is meant to lead.

But can she trust a stranger? And can a few days change everything she believes and desires? Against all odds, Bethanie must decide if her heart and her duties can coexist.

Excerpt 1

A yawn creeps up my throat and I suddenly feel like I haven’t slept in weeks. The temptation to curl up and go to sleep is strong, but my body is telling me I need a trip to the bathroom first.

I head down the hall to the door at the end. It’s ajar, so I push the door open—and freeze. The bathroom is not empty.

Howard stands at the sink, naked from the waist up, cleaning his teeth. Without clothing, his shoulders look twice as wide as before and every curve and dip in his muscles is clearly visible. Down the middle of his back is what looks like a big, black T. I have this crazy inclination to trace it to see how it feels.

Howard clears his throat and my gaze shoots up to find him watching me in the mirror. “Do you mind?”

He winks at me.

Oh crap!

“Sorry.” I pull the door shut. I’m mortified to have been caught staring. I also have butterflies in my stomach again, stronger than ever, and my heart is pounding. I fan my face with my hands in an attempt to calm myself down.

Before I can get everything under control, the door opens and a still-shirtless Howard walks out.

“All yours.”

I mentally slap myself for such an inept reply, but the view of him from the front is even better than the back. He has one of those washboard stomachs I’ve heard Gail talk about. I never understood what she meant, but now I can see how apt the description is. Once again, I find myself unable to stop staring.

“Good night, Bethanie,” Howard says strolling down the hallway.

“Howard? What’s the T on your back?” I ask, curiosity getting the better of me.

He stops and half turns towards me. “It’s a tattoo, and it isn’t a T, it’s a crucifix.”

“A crucifix?”

“Yeah, it’s the cross Christ was nailed to. It is a symbol of the weight I bare in the name of justice.”

“Huh. I’m sorry, I don’t really know what you’re talking about. It’s nice, though.”

“Thanks,” he says, “but I better get to bed if I’m going to be up early to take you to the post office.”

“Night,” I call after him.

“Sweet dreams,” he calls back.

I smile. They might just be.

Book Review: Phoenix Awakens by Eliza Nolan

Published November 1, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog

Title- Phoenix Awakens

Author- Eliza Nolan

Publisher- Createspace

A paranormal debut about a high school senior who finds herself in a fight with a secret society for control of ancient magic.

Julia never believed in magic.

Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham.

Graham admits he was a Phoenix — part of a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she’s discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive.

But the Phoenix Society wants Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

Can Julia uncover the truth behind her connection to Graham? How far will Julia go in order to save Graham and stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?

I have read a couple authors lately that have completely surprised me. I cannot believe this is Eliza’s Debut YA novel!

Julia and Graham were great main characters. In the beginning, I was not a fan of Graham for hanging out with Libby; I felt he was leading Julia on. I’m still not sure what went on with those two, but I am happy Julia and Graham worked it out. Julia was going through so much during the book and was left in the dark for most of it. Nothing was really spelled out for her and she handled it extremely well. I know if I was dreaming of events that took place, I would be freaking out a bit. Same with Graham, while he lived in Charleston, he got himself mixed in something a lot bigger than he knew. He also, didn’t think anything Julia was telling him was odd. He also didn’t freak out when she was able to take his pain away.

There were also secondary characters that interested me as well. Clara and Nate were great. Part of me didn’t really trust Nate since Graham didn’t seem to like him, but maybe there’s nothing up with him. I would love to see more of them in the next book. Samantha made me angry and then redeemed herself a little bit in the end; I’m glad things were worked out for her and Julia. I also was left wanting to know more about Julia’s dad and his connection to the Phoenixes, I have some of my own theories. I also, want to learn more about Julia’s mom, what really happened to her or is she alive?

Even though, this was a science fiction YA book, there were some very realistic aspects. A lot of the things the main characters were going through, were those of a normal high schooler; homework, friendship, bullies, outcasts, relationships.

This was the first book in the Phoenix Series and I cannot wait to read book two. I still have so many questions and I want to know what’s going to happen to Julia and Graham.

Eliza Nolan was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She lived in Charleston, South Carolina, for a few years, after which she returned to icy Minnesota – where she now lives with her two unruly cats in a house smaller than your closet.

She is an avid reader and writer of YA. She has ghostwritten a novel or two, but also writes her own stuff, and is finally publishing her debut young adult urban fantasy novel, Phoenix Awakens.
