Book Review: Mia and the Bad Boy by Lisa Burstien

Published May 17, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog

Title– Mia and the Bad Boy

Author– Lisa Brustein

Publisher- Entangled Crush

Release– May 19, 2015

This good girl’s about to meet her match…

Ryder Brooks is living the dream—he’s famous, loved by millions of girls, and miserable. All he really wants is to write his own music, not Seconds to Juliet’s sugary sweet pop. In order to do that, though, the “bad boy” of the band will have to play by the rules. And that includes behaving with his new—and super cute—über-good-girl tutor.

Mia Reyes is in fangirl heaven. Tutoring her favorite member of her favorite band? It’s a dream come true…until it turns into a complete nightmare. Ryder is nothing like she thought. He’s crude, arrogant, and pretty much a total jerk. And the worst part? She’s roped into pretending to be his girlfriend so that no one finds out he’s being tutored. Fake kisses, plenty of PDA, and even sharing his hotel room…

But sometimes even the baddest of bad boys needs a little redemption.

Mia and the Bad Boy is the second book in the backstage pass series. I loved Aimee and Miles, but I was very excited to know the other boys in S2J. In Mia and the Bad Boy, we get to know Ryder a bit more; I mean who wouldn’t want to read a story about the bad boy in the band. Ryder needs to get his GED so he can apply to college, the thing is he needs a little help studying, and that’s where Mia comes in. Mia is on tour to help him study, but he doesn’t want anyone to know so Ryder pretends that Mia is his girlfriend. Little did they know that pretending would bring them closer together.

I think this was a very sweet story and that really like Ryder. I think he grew so much and changed. I really enjoyed Ryder’s pov and I think I would have even enjoyed the book if it were solely his pov as much as I did with the duel pov.

There were so many adorable moments between Mia and Ryder, like the day at the fair and the video. That is all I can say with out giving the adorable moments away!!

I must confess I read would like to read Will’s story next. I know there’s more to him and the reason he is “The Shy One”. But honestly I know I would enjoy reading any of the other boy’s stories too.

Slowly fading into the shadows I step lightly away and down the street making my way to the white sports car with the dimly glowing dashboard lights within. I cross over to the passenger side door and knock quietly on the glass.

The door clicks unlocked. I hesitate before opening the door and getting down into the car. I stare at Reese’s tender eyes as I pull the door closed. The dome light turns off. His eyes continue sparkling with the reds and greens of the dashboard.

“I waited,” he says.

We stare at each other a long time. Eventually, I reach out and take his powerful hand and hold it. “What do you want?” I say. “A cookie?”

Reese grins. An electric tingle shoots through my belly. The car pulls away from the curb and begins moving quickly. The engine is so silent I didn’t even know it was on.

I keep his hand, gripping it tightly as I let both our hands rest on my left thigh. We don’t say another word while he drives quickly through the abandoned residential streets of the Brooklyn night.

The excitement of us fills up the small, contained space inside his expensive, low to the ground sports car. My defenses are down. I bathe in the drowning magic of our undeniable connection. I accept all the manipulation, the inconvenience, the likelihood of being used.

Right now it feels right. I am tired of thinking. I needed to get out of my mind and inside the moment. My eyelids drop. All is black. The only things I feel are his warm fingers laced with mine.

It’s three a.m. and we race alone across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. I lift my hand to touch his beautiful face. When he exhales his lips form a relaxed smile. The air we breathe becomes rich with the buzzing need of our beating hearts.

My Thoughts:

This year I have been fortunate enough to read books by author that I have never read before. Sometimes I don’t enjoy the author’s writing, but there are times where I beyond happy that I find this author. Kimberly Rose is now one of those authors to me!! Truth in Watercolors is the second book in the Truth Series, but I did t feel like I was missing anything by reading the second book first. I was completely hooked to Wes and Carpi’s story.

I tend to read A LOT of friends to lovers stories, and I’m not sure how I always end up with them, but since I do indeed read a lot of them I am always happy when I read one that engages me. Ms. Rose did a great job writing one of these stories that stuck out for me and I was never bored reading. I actually did laugh quite a bit.

Both main characters had their own set of problems, but I like how they were talked about and didn’t take the main focus away from the book. Again, Ms. Rose did such a great job sticking to her characters and their relationship, not other drama. I am going to first talk about Wes. What’s not to love, he has tattoos, he’s cute and has a great sense of humor! Every girl needs a guy that can make her laugh!! Then there’s Capri, she was equally as great with a bit of sass on top! I like how the two complemented each other and made each other better people!!!

We were introduced to the Queen quite suddenly. None of us had time to even look in a mirror to fix our hair. We met her in a small, cosy room filled with vases of white roses. She was sitting in a comfy red chair and there was a corgi asleep at her feet. She looked just like she did on stamps. She was quite small, and her hair was immaculately white. She was wearing a cream coloured skirt and matching top with gold buttons; the kind of outfit only The Queen can look good in. When we entered the room she smiled and stood up

“Pleased to meet you, you must be Oscar,” she said, shaking Tom’s hand (her voice was exactly as it sounds on TV).

Tom looked embarrassed. “That’s Oscar,” he mumbled, pointing at me.

“Ah. Of course. What a tribute you are to our nation…” she said, shaking my hand, then she moved on to Elliot, and started asking him questions.

I think she thought we were a boy band. She asked Elliot where he was from. When he told her London, she seemed surprised, and asked him what religion he was. He said he didn’t know. Then she moved on and started asking Abe Lincoln about his favourite songs. Abe Lincoln told her, then she moved swiftly on to ask Winston some questions, and that’s when something unbelievable happened (and thank god I was looking at Winston when it happened because it’s an image I’ll never forget). The Queen had just asked him what his middle name was. Winston was thinking of the answer, then his face went pale white and he leaned sideways and vomited into a giant Chinese vase. It all happened in slow motion. Elliot, Tom, Abe Lincoln and me gasped. The Queen shrieked, and her corgi woke up and started barking. A guard ran over and took the Queen by the arm and rushed her out of the room. Winston kept saying sorry, but it was no use. We were chased out by a furious Palace guard.

Book Blitz: Violet Hour by Andrea L. Wells

Published May 13, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog
The Violet Hour by Andrea L Wells
(The Violet series, #1)
Publication date: May 2015
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Still shocked over her mother’s mysterious death, California socialite Logan Keller is handed a one-way ticket to her long lost roots in Wyoming where love, deceit and danger await. Though she could forget everything staring into Luke Callahan’s eyes, Logan is quickly thrust into a fight for survival.  Taking fate into her own hands, she begins unraveling the dangerous deceptions that abound at every turn. Her father is keeping secrets and Luke is keeping more. But Logan is keeping the biggest secret of them all.

The Violet Hour is a page-turning captivating twist of young romance and the supernatural.

I sat up and pulled my knees in close to my chest. Electricity flared in the air as Luke inhaled.

“You know, Logan, you’re not who I expected you to be,” he said, taking a long thought-filled pause. “I thought the next twelve months were going to be hell living with a California socialite, but you’re pretty amazing. I guess I owe you an apology.”

“So, it’s a good thing that I’m nothing like you expected?” I asked.

“It’s a really, really good thing.”

As I started to smile back he craned his neck to look away from me. His eyes focused. Something black flashed across the road but I was more scared by Luke’s reaction. The warmth had vanished from Luke in a heartbeat. The object stopped moving toward us when it got to an opening between the trees. Even though I could feel Luke’s concern, I leaned forward toward the window, curious. It was a wolf – a really big wolf, staring directly at us with bright green eyes. It was close enough I could see quick breaths escape into the crisp rain-drenched air. I was startled when the engine roared to life. Luke threw the car into reverse, and I nearly slammed into the dash as the sound of gravel scattered everywhere. He quickly jockeyed around and pulled back onto the road heading home. I kept my eyes on the wolf until he was no longer in sight.

“Was that a wolf?” I asked. Everything happened so quickly, I had to be sure.

“Yes,” he spit.

“I’ve never seen a wolf before – that thing was huge.”

Luke immediately turned to look at me with an expression that I couldn’t begin to read.

“What’s going on?” I pressed, puzzled.

When he looked toward the road and didn’t answer, I knew my question needed to be more specific to get results.

“Why are you freaking out? It was just a wolf.” I was worried. He had gone from warm and comforting to moody and distant over such a small thing and I second-guessed how quickly I had fallen for him.

“Because I need to get you home, it’s getting late,” he muttered, failing to control his tone.

“That doesn’t make any sense, Luke. I have no curfew and you flaked as soon as you saw the wolf.”

“Wolves are dangerous.”

“We were in the car,” I countered.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Book Review: Mask and Mirrors by Sue Duff

Published May 12, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog

Title- Mask and Mirrors

Author- Sue Duff

Publisher- CrossWinds Publishing

Book Summery:

Ian Black’s commitment to safeguarding Earth has come at a price. His career as an illusionist is at a standstill and attending to the planet’s needs has distanced him from his best friend, his guardians, and the woman he loves. When presented with an opportunity to perform, Ian seizes the chance. But moments before he takes the stage, Ian encounters the mysterious Jaered and a rebel force fighting to protect Earth alongside the Weir.

Jaered is determined to stop a malevolent Weir from releasing a drug capable of wiping out the last vestiges of their race and plunging Earth into self-destruction. But when Jaered is willing to sacrifice an innocent child to obtain the drug for himself, Ian risks everything to uncover the secrets of the rebel forces and their true intentions for Earth’s survival.

My Thoughts:

Well Mask and Mirrors leaves off where Fade to Black left off in a world full of magic. Ian has been fulfilling his duties as Heir while Rayne lives her normal life. That is until they are asked to hide a mother and child, little do they know they will all be wrapped up into something bigger.

Again, I loved Ian, Rayne, Patrick, Tara, and I like that I got to know Jaered. I learned a lot about him and seeing more of him answered a lot of questions that I had after finishing the first book. Although, I now have some other unanswered questions about other characters and what they are really doing.

I do think that it is important to read the first book before reading the second. I think if I would have just jumped to the second, I would have been very confused. I think it also help that I read the two books back to back, this way all characters and events ever fresh in my mind.

Again, Sue Duff did a great job writing an action packed book, that kept me from putting it down!

Bella pulled a couple of books out of her locker. What was her first class again? She hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. The nightmare had returned. Why had it started up again? She hadn’t dreamt of that day months. It had to be the stress. Yesterday the tutoring requests had begun to come in, more than she could have anticipated for the first day of school. There was so much organization required. She had meant to come in early and do some work on it, but she was so tired. And her parents hadn’t helped. All they talked about was how it would look on college applications. Graduation was still two long years away. College wasn’t even a top priority at the moment. Surviving her junior year was the most important thing. Her brain was clogged like a hair-filled pipe. Not even Drano could unclog this mess.
“Look what the cat dragged in.” Heather jeered and paused behind Bella. Heather’s tag-alongs took up a spot on either side of Bella. The three girls effectively cornered Bella against her locker.
“Are you sure it was a cat, and not an old, frumpy, cat lady with no taste in clothes?”
Bella peered at Missy Watkins, a prickly blonde witch who was also on the cheerleading squad, and then turned back to her books. Yes, she had agreed to deal with their insults, but it would be on her time.
“You’re right about the clothes. And she does smell a little like mothballs.” Heather waved a hand in front of her face as if she were attempting to fan fumes away.
“I bet it’s the clothes that smell. They’re probably hand-me-downs from her grandmother.” Cassie Shows giggled; she was an uptight redhead, a third wheel in their little group and the only one not a cheerleader. She just had money. They had been tethered together from the moment the three of them met.
They normally poked fun at her clothes, so this wasn’t unusual behavior. She hadn’t worn anything different today than she had the day before. A dark denim skirt, a short-sleeve turquoise button-up trimmed with lace, and brown flats. Like always her hair was braided and hung down her back. Bella dug around in her locker. What was she looking for?
“You know, with all these rags, I’m really curious what your brother sees in her.” Missy crossed her arms and popped a hip out.
Heather snickered. “That’s easy. He feels sorry for her.”
They could make fun of her clothes or call her names, but she would be damned if they insulted what someone may feel for her. Bella’s hand tightened around a book. She stared at the book and imagined smacking Heather upside the head with it. Unfortunately, the suspension from school that would surely follow would suck. Inhaling deeply, she slammed her locker shut and turned around. “Listen up and listen good. I don’t give a rat’s behind what you think of my clothes. I know why you pick on me. I have something you don’t.”
“Like I would want bad ––”
“Shut up! I’m not finished. I have pride in who I am and I stand for something you can never get back. I still have the chance to give myself when I choose to because I love that person. You can’t. There are all kinds of rumors how freely you give it away. And now guys are losing interest, so you do and say whatever you need to, to make yourself feel better. Well, it ends here. I don’t care what a couple of sluts think of me because you can’t take away what I have.”
“Why you little ––”
“Don’t even try it, Heather. You’re nothing but tainted sludge. I suggest you get used to the gutter. It’s where you belong.” Bella shoved the three girls aside as if they were annoying flies. She hadn’t even noticed that a small crowd of students had gathered nearby, who clapped as she broke through. Her cheeks flushed with heat. With another deep breath, she made her way through the assembled students. Several patted her on the shoulder and others offered congratulations. An arm hooked into hers and she jumped. Alex, it was just Alex. A breath escaped her lips and her temperature started to come down.

Title- Fair Game

Author- Monica Murphy

Release Date- May 12, 2015

Book Summery:

Bad enough Jade Frost’s boyfriend drags her to a boring poker game. Even worse that he actually threw her into the betting pot during an intense round…and lost. Talk about the perfect excuse for Jade to make him her ex-boyfriend.

Now she supposedly belongs to the ultra rich, extremely gorgeous Shep Prescott. He could have anything he wants yet he seems to be in hot pursuit of her. No matter how rude, how snarky, how impossible she acts, it doesn’t stop him. More like her horrible behavior seems to make him want her more.

When she finds herself starting to fall for him, Jade’s confused. There’s more to Shep than the carefree rich charmer he portrays. No way could he want a serious relationship with her…or could he?

My Thoughts:

Before reading this book, I have heard such great things about Ms. Murphy and after finishing this book, I agree with everything I heard. This is one of these books where I needed to keep reading and stayed up until the we hours of the morning. I think the reason why I enjoyed this book so much was I felt the chemistry between Shep and Jade. I was rooting for them once they got together and the more I got to know Shep the more I thought he was great for Jade. I also liked Jade’s personality; she wasn’t taking any crap from Shep.

I cant wait to read Gabe and Tristan’s stories next, they are all about the one and dump, so I wonder what type of girl will hook them!

Book Review: Matter of the Heart by Amy Fellner

Published May 10, 2015 by adventuresinbooklandblog

A Matter of Heart

by Amy Fellner Dominy

Publisher: Delacorte
Release Date: May 2015

Readers will happily sink into this emotionally grounded, contemporary young adult novel about the sudden end of one girl’s Olympic swimming dreams and the struggles she endures before realizing there are many things that define who we are.

Sixteen-year-old Abby Lipman is on track to win the state swim championships and qualify for the Olympic trials when a fainting incident at a swim meet leads to the diagnosis of a deadly heart condition. Now Abby is forced to discover who she is without the one thing that’s defined her entire life.

My Thoughts:

Matter of the Heart was story about moving on after your dreams are no longer attainable. Abby Lipman is a competitive swimmer, she wakes up early and goes to practice, she practices in the after school and on the weekends. When she gets dizzy and blackouts one day after a swim meet, her parents take her to the doctor. Abby then finds out she has HCM (an enlarge heart), and will need to take medication that will keep her heart rate down. A slow heart rate means she would be able to swim very fast, which makes Abby’s entire world come crashing down.

I liked most of the characters in the story. One I couldn’t stand was Abby’s partner, Connor, I still want to know what his story was and if Alec was correct. Abby was such a likable person and dealt with her HCM the way any athlete would have. Who would want to give up the one thing their world surrounds.

This book was such a great read that I just read through in the matter of a couple of sittings. Once I finished the book, I wished there was more! I feel like these characters still have a story to tell.
